April 25, 2024 report

April 25, 2024

Summary  The trough of low pressure responsible for the major cool down of the past 24 hours has moved southeastward into Arizona. Following closely on its heels is a second low which is currently moving into northern California and will move into central California late this afternoon through Friday. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will spread down the Sierra Nevada. The vast majority of locations on the valley floor will remain dry with only a slight chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms mainly near the foothills, primarily Friday afternoon or evening. Pressure gradients will tighten up between the interior west and off shore. This will generate somewhat breezier than usual conditions. The flow aloft will become north westerly through Saturday. A zonal or westerly flow will then take place Sunday through Tuesday, allowing temperatures to struggle up to near seasonal with marginally above average temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday. The next trough of low pressure will not affect California until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. for now, it appears any precipitation will remain over the northern one-quarter of California with  dry weather for the valley.

Forecast Mostly clear skies this morning. partly cloudy this afternoon through Friday. There will be a slight chance of widely scattered showers or thunderstorms, mainly near the foothills Friday afternoon through the early evening hours. Mostly clear skies Saturday through Wednesday night. partly cloudy Thursday.

Two Week Forecast:  May 1 through May 7: A persistent trough of low pressure will remain anchored over and along the west coast. This will keep temperatures near to below average with a greater risk of showers.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds: There will be periods of winds, mainly out of the northwest, at 10 to 20 mph at times through Sunday. Gusts to 30 mph are possible, mainly along the western side of Fresno, Merced, and Kings Counties, but locally elsewhere. There will be periods of somewhat lighter winds, mainly during the night and morning hours.

Rain: Widely scattered light showers and isolated thunderstorms will slide down the Sierra Nevada Friday through early Friday evening. There’s only a slight risk of an isolated shower or thunderstorm near the foothills. Otherwise, the valley floor will remain dry. Expect dry weather Saturday through all of next week.
