Forecast

April 17, 2019/report

April 17, 2019

Summary: There are some lower level clouds in various locations over the valley floor this morning.  Many locations, though, are mostly clear.  The sounding above Visalia indicated an overcast of 4,600 feet.  As the day wears on, the clouds will dissipate in response to building upper level high pressure.  Already this morning, the freezing level has jumped back to 12,300 feet above Vandenberg AFB.  By tomorrow, some of the warmer locations could approach the 90 degree mark with a greater possibility of upper 80s and lower 90s Friday.

Over the weekend, a rather compact but anemic low pressure system will quickly move through Friday night and Saturday, resulting in our next cooling trend.  It appears temperatures will bottom out Easter Sunday, moving back into the lower 70s only to take another big jump Tuesday through Thursday of  next week as a larger upper level high off the southern California coast expands northward and eastward over the region.

The overall pattern has now become rather benign.  Temperatures will swing up and down from time to time for the next week to ten days but I don’t see any signal on models at this time that would result in precipitation.  Even the new two week outlook is showing dry conditions with near average temperatures.

Forecast: Pockets of low clouds this morning, otherwise it will be mostly clear through Friday night.  partly cloudy Saturday through Easter Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 24 through April 30:  Models continue to indicate generally dry conditions as upper level high pressure will be the most dominant feature during this time frame.  Overall, temperatures will generally be above average.

April: This model shows April will be fairly typical with near to marginally above average temperatures during the month.  This model also indicates there will be equal chances of above or below average precipitation. In other words, the road map on this model is rather vague.

April, May, June: Like the April projection, this model really has no dominant features that would indicate either above or below average temperatures, although the overall pattern should result in marginally above average readings.  We are moving into the dry season, and this model indicates equal chances of above or below average rainfall.  As we move forward, this will become a moot point.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Friday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  Winds late Friday night and Saturday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.

Rain: Expect dry weather to continue for the next week to ten days.
