October 2, 2017

Summary:  We have a squeeze play between high pressure over the eastern Pacific and low pressure over the Great Basin and northern Rockies.  This has created a strong northwest flow over northern and central California.  At the surface, a rather robust on shore flow is in place.  Several locations from Merced northward have northwest winds topping 20 MPH.  this is an indication of marine air pouring into the valley.  As a result, temperatures will likely struggle to reach the 80 degree mark today with only slight warming on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A secondary low will develop over northern and central California Tuesday, maintaining the below average temperatures.

Thursday will be a turn around day as the eastern Pacific high begins to move to the east into the western United States.  This will result in the marine machine being shut down as warming air aloft moves in.

From Friday through Sunday, readings will approach the 90 degree mark and will remain there through at least Tuesday of next week.  The longer range models point to a dry pattern under mostly high pressure with temperatures at least marginally above average.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Thursday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: October 6 through October 12:  This model is indicating a low pressure system will be over the interior west with a possible off shore flow over interior California.  This pattern is always a dry pattern with temperatures at least marginally above average.

October:  The month of October, according to the latest models, will have generally or at least marginally above average temperatures as high pressure remains over the Desert Southwest.  The Pacific Northwest will have above average precipitation and above average temperatures.  Central California will be squeezed between these two systems, so it appears we’ll have an equal chance of rain for the month, which shouldn’t range too far from average.

October, November, December:  Looking out to October through December, models show marginally above average temperatures for central and southern California.  Models also indicate precipitation will be near average with the main storm track moving through the Pacific Northwest.

Winds:  Winds will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH through Tuesday, decreasing to around 5 to 10 MPH Wednesday through Thursday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
