Forecast

June 20, 2020/report

June 20, 2020

Summary: Just in case you’re counting, the summer solstice will occur at 2:43 this afternoon.  With the fourteen hours and forty one minutes of daylight, today is the longest day of the year as tomorrow will be one second shorter.

A typical early summer weather pattern is in place.  A zone of upper level high pressure covers the eastern Pacific Ocean across California and into the Desert Southwest.  The marine layer along the central coast deepened somewhat overnight and is now 1,900 feet deep.  Modified marine air is moving through the Delta. At last report, winds there were out of the southwest at 24 MPH, gusting to 19 MPH.  there is a limited amount of sea breeze trickling through Pacheco Pass.  Winds at that location are gusting to 23 MPH.

We may actually see some cooling from Merced County northward, however the central and south valley will remain rather toasty as most locations will top out at around the century mark this afternoon.  Models show the high slowly strengthening and bulging further north Monday through Wednesday.  For now, it appears the hottest day in this series may be Wednesday or Thursday when most locations will peak in the 102 to 105 degree range.

Models for late next week or next weekend vary a great deal.  One shows a trough of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest and northern California, resulting in somewhat cooler weather.  Others show this system remaining too far to the north to have much impact.  Bottom line is, for the next 7 to 10  days, typical summer weather will prevail with very dry conditions continuing.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Wednesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday.
