Summary: The marine layer this morning is 2,400 feet deep, according to the latest sounding at the naval installation at Fort Ord. there is modified marine air moving down the valley and there will be enough for near average temperatures again today. Currently, winds at Travis Air Force Base in the Delta are out of the southwest sustained at 18 MPH, gusting to 24. There’s also some sea breeze leaking over the Coast Range.
Overall, a high center is just off the Oregon/northern California coast and it will slide southeastward over California Thursday and Friday. By Saturday, a massive high will have developed with its center over Nevada, eventually building a big ridge northward through the Pacific Northwest. This high continues to show up on models as unusually strong. The clockwise circulation around the high will also bring the winds aloft out of the southeast, in effect, pumping hot air from the Desert Southwest into California. Some models continue to project hottest readings on the valley floor will approach the 110 degree mark. With the valley becoming capped under a dome of high pressure and its subsiding air mass, smoke and smog will continue to be trapped on the valley floor for poor air quality.
The heat wave will peak Sunday and Labor Day then the high will weaken by midweek. Even so, readings may still eclipse the century mark until we progress towards the latter part of next week or even next weekend when a trough of low pressure will approach the northern California coast, allowing temperatures to fall to double digits.
Forecast: Clear but hazy through Thursday. Mostly clear and extremely hot Friday through Tuesday. Mostly clear and a bit cooler Wednesday.
