Forecast

May 5, 2022/report

May 5, 2022

The northern portion of the ridge of upper level high pressure which has driven temperatures into the lower 90s is breaking down. We should see one more day of lower 90s before a significant cooling trend begins Friday. Already this morning, the marine layer has deepened and is moving through the Delta. Winds at Travis AFB are sustained at 18 mph while further south through Pacheco Pass, winds are still light and variable. We should see enough modified marine air to allow readings to fall into the upper 80s from Merced County north. This system will spread precipitation over northwest California and the Mount Shasta/Siskiyou region. A second low will spread showers into northern California Saturday; however, the main impact will be to accelerate the cooling trend and to result in occasionally gusty winds. By Monday, the low will almost pinch off, forming a low over northern California, sinking into central California Tuesday and Wednesday. Light showers will spread into the Sierra Nevada with even a minimal chance over the valley floor. Temperatures will drop well down into the 70s Monday through Thursday of next week with readings heading north again beginning a week from Saturday as upper level high pressure begins to build in from the west.

Forecast: Mostly clear today. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy tonight through Monday. increasing cloudiness Monday night leading to a small chance of light showers Tuesday through Wednesday. A slight chance of light showers will continue Wednesday night and Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 11 through May 17: This time around, the main storm track is projected to be moving through the Pacific Northwest with a northwesterly flow over California. This will result in marginally below average temperatures with little to no chance of precipitation.

May:  This model shows a dominant high stretching from Texas to southern California, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures for the month. It also gives an equal chance of above or below normal precipitation.

May, June, July: This model shows an early season high over the Four Corners region of the desert southwest, stretching westward to California, causing temperatures as we head into summer to be marginally above average. Since this is the dry season, the chances of precipitation will be very low

Wind Discussion: Winds will be light this morning, becoming out of the west or northwest this afternoon at 5 to 12 mph, increasing tonight and at times through Friday to 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph possible along the west side and locally elsewhere. Winds Saturday will continue to be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph at times.

Rain:  Dry conditions will continue through at least Monday night. A cold pool of unstable air will move overhead Tuesday through Thursday of next week. light showers will spread down the Sierra Nevada with a small chance of a few light showers over the valley floor Tuesday through Thursday. The greatest potential will be along the Sierra  Nevada foothills during the afternoon and evening. Dry weather will return Friday.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
