Fresno, Bakersfield, and Taft soared to 110 yesterday while Hanford hit 111 and Lemoore 112. It’s no surprise that those are the hottest readings of the year so far. Strong upper level high pressure over the Four Corners region has California in its grip. The clockwise flow around the high is also transporting mid and high level moisture in from the southeast via the monsoon. This will increase the chance of isolated thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada and mid and high level clouds over the San Joaquin Valley. This particular pattern is common during the summer and early fall, although the high is a bit stronger than usual. The marine layer remains at 1,200 feet deep this morning. Winds at Travis AFB in the Delta are southwest at 22 mph. However, the difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas is slight, so no modified marine air is expected the next few days, though the high will weaken a tad as we head into Thursday and Friday. Even so, temperatures will remain in triple digits. In fact, high resolution modeling indicates we will be near to slightly above 100 all the way through the weekend. Hurricane Estelle is marching towards the west/northwest west of the southern tip of Baja and will have no impact on California’s weather.

Forecast: Partly cloudy through Wednesday and continued hot. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Monday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 25 through July 31  This model continues to show well above average temperatures during this period. It also shows a better than even chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern California deserts and possibly up the Sierra Nevada. The usual dry conditions will continue over the valley floor.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
