July 23, 2022/report

July 23, 2022

There remains plenty of warm air above central California. The balloon sounding above Oakland a short time ago indicated a freezing level of 17,500 feet. The marine layer along the coast has deepened a tad over the past 24 hours with a depth of 1500 feet. There is some modified marine air moving through the Delta. Winds at Travis AFB are currently sustained at 19 mph while further south at Pacheco Pass winds are sustained at 20 mph. There is still not enough difference in surface pressure to pull that sea breeze down the valley, although places like Merced and Los Banos could dip into the mid to upper 90s. Yesterday on the valley floor, readings ranged from 100 at Visalia to 105 at Lemoore. Similar conditions can be anticipated through the weekend. Satellite imagery shows a batch of high clouds over southern California from the monsoon, some of which will clip the southern Sierra Nevada for a daily chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high country. Currently, the clockwise flow around the high is maintaining south/southwesterly winds aloft. We will see some high clouds from time to time, however any precipitation will be confined to the back country of our Sierra.

Forecast: Outside of occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear through Tuesday and continued hot. Mostly clear and continued hot Tuesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 30 through August 5  This model is showing a very active monsoon through the entire period with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra. There will be periods of variable amounts of mid and high level clouds over the valley floor from time to time.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
