Merced County northward will receive minor relief from the heat due to a shallow burst of marine air. However, south of Merced County, triple digits will continue through Saturday. Currently, there is simply not enough difference in pressure to tug that marine layer inland, even though the marine layer is up to 2,000 feet. For example, the altimeter currently at San Francisco is 29.97 inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the pressure was 29.95. So, as you can see, there’s almost no difference. That will begin to change over the second half of the weekend as a weak upper air disturbance moves into northern California, increasing the onshore flow and allowing temperatures to fall back to near seasonal levels. With a little bit of luck, readings will drop into the mid to upper 90s Sunday through Tuesday. Models indicate a large upper high will build over the west beginning the middle of next week, meaning we’ll start off September much like August as readings move back into the 100 plus degree range. For now, the monsoon is being deflected well to our southeast, so no chance of precipitation for the foreseeable future.
Forecast: Mostly clear through Tuesday. Mostly clear Tuesday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: September 2 through September 8: This model shows the monsoon moving slightly to our east, reducing the chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. The trend of above average temperatures this August will continue.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Monday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
