November 3, 2022 afternoon report

November 3, 2022

A northwest flow both at the surface and aloft continues to generate the usual upslope clouds banked up against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains and the west facing slopes of the southern Sierra Nevada. As of midday, Bakersfield was reporting a broken deck of clouds at 5,500 feet and Porterville has an overcast at 4,300. These clouds will slowly diminish from northwest to southeast during the afternoon, but it’s quite possible some clouds may hang in there through Friday morning in Kern County and southeast Tulare County. Mostly clear skies will prevail under weak  high pressure later Friday into Sunday for a pleasant weekend.

What appears now to be two weather systems will affect California late Sunday night through Wednesday of next week. the first phase will spread rain over the valley Monday with showers Monday night. The second will follow closely, moving inland late Tuesday into the day Wednesday. I still have my fingers crossed that these will be significant precipitation producers.

Upper level high pressure will follow Wednesday and beyond with dry weather and, dare I say, patchy night and morning fog.

Forecast: Mostly clear this afternoon in Madera and Fresno Counties and northern Kings County. Mostly to partly cloudy in Kern and Tulare Counties. Some of the cloud cover may remain into the day Friday. Otherwise, Friday will be mostly clear.  Mostly clear skies will continue Friday night well into Sunday. Clouds will increase again late Sunday and Sunday night. Rain spreading over the valley Monday with showers Monday night. Periods of rain Tuesday through Wednesday morning. A chance of showers Wednesday afternoon. Mostly to partly cloudy Wednesday night. Partly cloudy Thursday morning. Becoming mostly clear Thursday afternoon.

Short Term:

Madera 33/63/34/65 Reedley 34/62/35/64 Dinuba 32/62/34/64
Porterville 34/63/35/65 Lindsay 32/62/34/65 Delano 34/62/36/66
Bakersfield 42/62/43/65 Taft 43/61/44/64 Arvin 39/61/38/65
Lamont 40/62/38/64 Pixley 34/63/36/65 Tulare 32/62/35/65
Woodlake 33/63/35/65 Hanford 33/64/35/64 Orosi 32/62/34/64

Wind Discussion:  Winds will continue to be out of the northwest through this evening at 10 to 20 mph. Stronger gusts can be expected along the west side through sunset. Winds later tonight will be light to near calm. Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Sunday. For now, our rain event for next week will apparently come in two waves. The first will arrive Monday morning. A few renegade showers could arrive as early as Sunday night. Showers will continue on and off Monday night. System number two will bring precipitation in Tuesday into Tuesday night. A chance of showers Wednesday, mainly during the morning. Mostly to partly cloudy Wednesday night and Thursday morning.  Dry weather returns later Thursday.

Frost:  Dew points this afternoon are generally running in the upper 30s to the lower 40s. Even though it wasn’t the storm of the century, the ground is largely wet which always works in our favor. Air temperatures will be the coolest since we’ve seen last spring with temperatures only in the low 50s in the south valley and mid 50s elsewhere. The wild card tonight will be cloud cover. High resolution models indicates a great deal of the cloud cover will dissipate from northwest to southeast with some stubborn cloud cover remaining in the south valley. By and large, the threshold of this air mass will bring temperatures where it’s clear into the low to mid 30s with a small chance of upper 20s in the coldest locations. Groves under cloud cover will only see mid 30s to even lower 40s where the cloud cover is more dense. Lows Saturday morning will generally be in the 30s as well, with only slight moderation, at best. A westerly flow will begin over the weekend, possibly bringing some clouds and much warmer weather into central California. A very active weather pattern will maintain well above freezing conditions Monday through Thursday. Again, for now nothing damaging is on the horizon.
