November 10, 2022 afternoon report

November 10, 2022

Even though we’re a full 48 hours post storm system that brought such beneficial precipitation, we are still seeing upslope clouds against the north facing slopes of the Kern County mountains. It may be another day or so before that completely dissipates. The visible satellite imagery is absolutely gorgeous this afternoon. It depicts a mantle of white from south of the Tulare County line to the Mount Shasta/Siskiyou area. Let’s pray that becomes a dominant theme this winter. It’s been several years since we’ve seen a prolonged period of below average temperatures this early in the season, but looking at medium range models, I don’t see a break in this overall pattern until at least a week for Saturday as the general flow pattern will be either northerly or even northeasterly for the next week or so. The short term outlook shows a sharp ridge of narrow upper level  high pressure followed by an equally narrow trough of low pressure shooting down from the Gulf of Alaska. The southern portion of that trough will pinch off, forming a new upper air disturbance which will move through Oregon and northeast California before diving into western Nevada. Some snow showers are possible over the high country late Friday into Saturday, but there’s no chance of rain for the valley. The flow will again become north/northeast Sunday behind that flow for another reinforcing shot of cold air. As a matter of fact, it’s possible Monday and Tuesday could be the coldest in this series if dry air filters down. It’s actually good news that the soil is nice and moist as temperatures could actually be several degrees colder if not for the wet ground. It’s actually the same theory as running water on cold nights, the difference being Mother Nature ran it for us. The bottom line is, we will have areas of night and morning fog, mainly up and down the center of the valley, with hazy afternoons and well below average temperatures for the next week.

Forecast: Outside of occasional high clouds and areas of night and morning fog, mainly up the center of the valley, it will be mostly clear through Monday. mostly clear Monday through Thursday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds, mainly up the center of the valley.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday. Winds during the late morning and afternoon hours will be generally less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  Expect widespread low to mid 30s to tonight and at least for the next 4 to 5 nights. Fortunately, even though this is a chilly air mass, it’s not a dry one. Dew points this afternoon are generally in the low to mid 30s. the very coldest river bottoms will again tease with the upper 20s for short durations. The inversion tonight will be somewhat tighter than it was last night as the air mass has had an additional 24 hours to settle down. However, we’ll see more locations in the lower 30s because the environment has stabilized. Really, what I see for the next week is widespread low to mid 30s each night. We could see a night in there where fog plays a more central role, although I doubt it this early in the season. Or we could see some higher level clouds moving in from disturbances moving through the Great Basin. But by and large, there won’t be enough to be significant.
