At midday, there are high, thin clouds streaming over the vvalley from the west/southwest. These clouds are overrunning a cold high which covers most of the west and just off shore. Temperatures so far today are anywhere from 2 to 4 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago in Madera and Merced Counties. A low pressure system out of the Gulf of Alaska will move through Oregon tonight and into Nevada Saturday. This will be a dry system for the valley, but it will spread a chance of light snow showers over the Sierra Nevada, mainly from Fresno County north. As the low continues to move south/southeastward, it will move into northern Arizona Sunday, regenerating a northeast flow aloft. This will inject a reinforcing shot of cold air into the valley Sunday, lowering temperatures from the low 60s Saturday down to the mid to upper 50s Sunday. This is a rather oddball pattern, but a second dry low will form off the Oregon coast, dropping southward over central California Tuesday. While dry, it will develop a north/northeast flow just as upper level high pressure is building northward into the Gulf of Alaska. As a result, more cold air will surge into the state Wednesday through Friday, continuing the well below average temperatures. Well below average temperatures will continue thr0ugh the middle of the month and quite possibly beyond. Some models show a flat high building over the western states about Sunday of next week which would possibly set up a warming trend.
Forecast: Variable high, thin clouds tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Sunday night. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Wednesday night with areas of patchy fog. Mostly clear Thursday and Friday with areas of night and morning fog.

Wind Discussion: Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday. Winds during the late morning and afternoon hours will be generally less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
Frost: High, thin clouds will be overhead for at least the first half of the night tonight, but they may be too thin to impact the radiational cooling process. Even so, the back side of the clouds may exit the valley during the eary morning hours, so a forecast of low to mid 30s seems prudent. Like the last few night temperatures could briefly dip into the upper 20s in those cold locales. The inversion tonight will be fairly solid with temperatures at 34 feet anywhere from 5 to7 degrees warmer. If this were later in December or January, we’d be losing a lot of sleep with this pattern, but this time of year, these nights are good for chilling hours and not bad for citrus, either. I want to keep an eye on the pattern for later this week as another arctic air mass will plunge southward into the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain region, possibly injecting another pocket of cold air down the valley. For now, I’m continuing with low to mid 30s all the way into next weekend, but will watch closely as we move through the week.
