May 4, 2023 report

May 4, 2023 am

Summary: The following are storm totals as of 5:00 am: Bakersfield .12, Delano .04, Belridge .21, Kettleman Hills .28, Visalia .13, Lemoore .32, Reedley .16, Fresno .26, Merced .14, and Porterville .03.

Doppler radar this morning is indicating scattered showers moving from south to north, rotating around a cold upper low centered just to our west. Scattered showers will continue to be possible through this evening. The low will then open up into a trough and weaken. That trough will remain over and along the west coast through the weekend. Beginning Friday, any active weather should be confined to the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. The pool of air associated with this low is quite cold. The balloon sounding above Oakland a short time ago indicated a freezing level of 5,500 feet. Temperatures will begin to slowly warm over the weekend but will still be below average. In fact, temperatures will remain at least marginally below average through the middle of next week. as we approach next weekend, a ridge of upper level high pressure will build over the eastern Pacific and eventually into the western US, allowing for warmer weather by next weekend.

Forecast: Scattered showers through this evening with a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. A chance of scattered showers tonight, mainly before midnight. Partly cloudy Friday through Monday. mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Thursday

Two Week Outlook:  May 11 through May 17: This model is indicating a fairly strong ridge of upper level high pressure will be over and along the west coast this will result in above average temperatures. Precipitation will be unlikeleey.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This  model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months.. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season,, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be variable to 15 mph at times through Friday. Stronger gusts are possible near showers and thunderstorms. From Friday night through Sunday, winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 8 to 15 mph. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally variable to no more than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: The risk of showers will continue through this evening. There is a low chance of isolated thunderstorms this afternoon through the evening hours. So far from this storm, several locations have received between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Amounts from the rest of this event will be light, ranging from trace amounts to as much as .20. more is possible when and if isolated thunderstorms develop. We’ll keep a chance of showers through the late evening hours. Friday will be the first day of a dry pattern which should last a week to possibly ten days. Models going out from the mid to the latter part of May are indicating a dry pattern.
