May 26, 2023 report

May 26, 2023 am

Summary: The valley remains flooded with marine air which continues to occasionally surge inland due to a moderate onshore flow and a trough of low pressure stretching from the Pacific Northwest to southern California. The low clouds along the coast show up nicely on satellite imagery, moving through the Delta and into the extreme northern San Joaquin Valley and southern Sacramento Valley. It was only 72 at Los Banos yesterday and 79 at Taft. Both locations are near gaps and passes in the Coast Range. Most other locations wound up in the low 80s. Slow warming will occur over the weekend as the trough moves inland. However, a second low will drop southward from the Pacific Northwest and into northern California by Sunday evening. It will be almost directly overhead Monday. the only weather associated with this feature will be scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms each day over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and to maintain near average temperatures next week, possibly slightly below. The eastern Pacific high will continue to be suppressed west of the western US.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday night. Mostly clear skies will continue Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 3 through June 8  This model shows a weak but broad trough of low pressure along the west coast. Typically, this is a dry pattern in early June, allowing modified marine air to move inland from time to time. Temperatures will remain marginally below average with dry conditions continuing.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at around 8 to 15 mph during the afternoon through the late evening hours with locally stronger gusts through Monday. Winds during the later night and morning hours will be generally out of the northwest at no more than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry weather for the next week to 10 days.
