November 26, 2023 afternoon report

November 26, 2023

Summary:    Variable high clouds have spread over the valley today due to a weak upper air disturbance just west of Monterey. Models show at least some cloud cover for most of the night so I believe this will be a low to mid 30 event rather than an upper 20/low 30 event like the past couple of nights.  The next system of note will be a teaser in the form of a low pressure system currently in the Gulf of Alaska. Models show the lower portion pinching off, forming a closed low off the California coast. The low will move southeastward through central California Wednesday for a minimal chance of sprinkles or light showers Wednesday into Wednesday evening. The system we’ve been tracking for Thursday night and Friday looks slightly more menacing this afternoon for another chance of showers Friday. Models show roughly a 30 percent chance of a tenth of an inch of rain Friday through Friday evening. The main forecast challenge will be discerning overnight low temperatures due to cloud cover associated with these features. The upper 20s and lower 30s of recent mornings will be replaced by marginally milder temperatures and possibly higher dew points. After this system moves through Friday night, a slightly colder air mass will make its way down the valley for possible additional frost nights Friday through Monday mornings. From the second half of the weekend and well into the following week, a strong westerly flow will move across the Pacific and the Pacific Northwest with central California remain just south of the west weather.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly tonight through tuesdsay with patchy late night and early morning fog. Variable cloudiness Wednesday with a minimal  chance of light showers. A slight chance of light showers Wednesday evening. Partly cloudy Thursday. Variable cloudiness Thursday night and Friday with a minimal chance of light showers. Partly cloudy Saturday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday night through Sunday.

Winds:  Winds through Wednesday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: It looks like we  have two minimal chances of precipitation this week. the first will be Wednesday through Wednesday evening. This feature looks pretty anemic and will likely drop .05 or less. the second system will affect the valley Thursday night through Friday night. models are a bit more bullish on this system this afternoon. One model actually depicts a 70 percent chance of rain. For the periods Sunday through Wednesday of next week, a very wet jet stream will slam the Pacific Northwest and about the northern 1/3 of California.  Currently it appears just south of the active weather, but this could change.

Frost:  The main forecast challenge will be discerning overnight low temperatures due to cloud cover associated with these features. Coldest river bottom type locations tonight will generally range from 29 to 32. Most of the average flatland terrain locations will range from 32 to 35 hillsides will be above freezing. Tonight’s inversion will be strong with temperatures at 34 feet being 5 to 8 degrees warmer. There’s still no indication of a pattern that would result in risky weather.
