November 28, 2023 afternoon report

November 28, 2023

Summary:   As of 1:00pm, temperatures had moved into the mid 60s at most locations, generally 2 to 3 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. The air mass has modified enough to keep most locations in the low to mid 30s  tonight with only the coldest river bottom type in the upper 20s for short durations. We continue to monitor the progress of a weak low pressure system located roughly 350 miles west of San Francisco. This system will continue to track southeasterly, just skirting the central coast Wednesday morning. it now appears unlikely any measurable rain will occur with this system. The next system is colder and will move out of the Gulf of Alaska Thursday night and Friday with the trailing portion moving through northern and central California. Measurable rain is also extremely doubtful with this system. As the trough passes Friday, a cooler air mass will overspread the region. Highs will back off into the upper 50s and lower 60s. Lows will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s Friday and Saturday. Models show an extremely wet jet stream sweeping into the Pacific Northwest and the northern one-third of California Saturday through Monday. Again, precipitation will remain to our north. It now appears that from Tuesday through Friday of next week, a ridge of high pressure will dominate, keeping conditions dry. Highs Monday through Wednesday will warm back up into the low to mid 60s for highs and the low to mid 30s for lows.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies tonight with patchy late night fog. Partly cloudy Wednesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Wednesday night and Thursday. Partly cloudy Thursday night and Friday with a slight chance of sprinkles. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday night through Tuesday with patchy late night and early morning fog.

Winds:  Winds through Thursday night will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions. Winds Friday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts.

Rain:  The chance for measurable rain this week is all but gone. I’ll leave a small chance of sprinkles or light showers in the forecast for Friday morning as the trailing portion of a trough of low pressure moves through. The storm track for the weekend and early next week will migrate northward, affecting only the northern one-third of California. It now appears we will remain dry through at least Friday of next week. there is still nothing showing up on models conducive for rain for the southern 2/3  of California.

Frost: temperatures at most locations tonight will range in the low to mid 30s with only the coldest river bottom and similar locations coming in below freezing. Hillsides will continue to be above freezing. A cooler air mass will overspread the valley Friday lowering temperatures into the upper 50s/lower 60s. overnight lows Sunday through Monday will generally range in the low to mid 30s, however a few more additions may drop into the mid to upper 20s. Lows for the better part of next week will range mainly in the low to mid 30s. however, lows Monday through Tuesday at the very coldest locations may dip briefly into the upper 20s.
