December 1, 2023 report

December 1, 2023

Summary:   A fast moving trough of low pressure moved through central California overnight. The only location I could find with measurable rainfall was Porterville with .03.  a few other locations posted trace amounts. A northwest push of air is now moving down the valley. The lifting factor of the Kern County mountains has formed a solid cloud deck over Kern County and southeastern Tulare County. These clouds will be slow to move off. The base of the overcast above Bakersfield is 7,000 feet while the sounding above Porterville pegged the base of the overcast near 5,000 feet. Further north, mostly clear skies prevai; the trough of low pressure has already sped into the Great Basin. As barometric pressure falls over the interior, and rises off shore, winds will begin to pick up out of the west/northwest. They’ll range between 10 and 20 mph with stronger gusts with lighter winds elsewhere. Upper level high pressure centered about 1,000 miles southwest of Los Angeles will now build eastward into California, nudging the storm track back into the Pacific Northwest, bringing the temperatures back down into the lower 60s.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy this morning over Kern County and southeastern Tulare County with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies elsewhere. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy this afternoon through Sunday with patchy morning fog. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Friday.

Seven Day Forecast

Monday Mostly clear 34/62                           Tuesday Mostly clear 35/64Wednesday Mostly clear 36/68Thursday Mostly clear 37./70Friday Partly cloudy 36/63

Two Week Outlook:  December 7 through December13  This model shows above average precipitation for northern California with the southern 2/3 of California remaining dry. With that in mind, the chance of precipitation remains low with above average temperatures prevailing.

November:  This model depicts above average temperatures for California eastward to the northern Great Basin. Precipitation projections show near average rainfall.

November, December, January:  This model projects above average temperatures over the western US. It’s rather surprising that this model is projecting near average precipitation. Typically, during strong El Nino years, which this is, above average precipitation prevails.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 mph in Merced County and western Fresno and Kings Counties. Elsewhere, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts. Winds later this evening and on through Monday will be generally at or less than 6 mph with near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry weather for the  next 5 days and possibly longer.

Frost Discussion: Northwesterly winds are moving down the valley and are issuing in a somewhat colder air mass. Lows tonight with vary considerably due to the possibility of lingering clouds in Kern County, wind conditions, and mixing.  Most other locations will drop into the lower 30s. Upper 20s will be possible in the wind sheltered frog pond locations. Most frost pockets will chill down to 29 to 31 with most flatland locations in the low to mid 30s. hillside locations will remain above freezing. The inversion tonight will be weak with temperatures at 34 feet generally 2 to 5 degrees warmer. Lows should be similar Sunday morning. as stronger high pressure builds in Monday through Wednesday, daytime highs will warm into the mid to upper 60s by Wednesday. Low temperatures will be slower to respond and will generally remain in the low to mid 30s through the middle of the week.
