December 6, 2023
Summary: temperatures are anywhere from 7 to 13 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Surface observations are reporting winds out of the northwest from generally 8 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 along the west side. Upslope clouds continue to regenerate against the valley facing slopes of both the southern Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains. Upper level high pressure is located roughly 600 miles west of the California coast. The high will continue to build northward and eastward over the next 72 hours, which will cap the valley with a fairly seasonal air mass. After tonight, frost will become a way of life during the late night and early morning hours as a dry valley floor combines with the long nights of the winter season, creating ideal conditions for cooling to take place. By Tuesday, the off shore high will build even further to our north, blocking any hope of precipitation for the foreseeable future. The storm track will move up and over the high, extending California’s dry spell through at least mid December.
Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Sunday with patchy night and morning fog. Remaining mostly cloudy tonight in portions of Kern County. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday through Thursday with patchy late night and early morning fog.
