February 23, 2024 report

February 23, 2024

Summary  A great deal of high and mid level clouds will be streaming over the southern 2/3 of  California through tonight. However, no active weather is associated with this cloud mass. A weak ridge of high pressure resides over the western ¼ of California while a fairly large low is parked around 600 miles west of the central coast. This low will simply sit out there all weekend then will make its move inland Monday and Tuesday. The chance of rain looks somewhat higher for early next week even though the system will be weakening somewhat as it moves through southern California. Quantitative precipitation estimates indicate the possibility of between ¼ and 1/3 of an inch over the southern half of the San Joaquin Valley, mainly Monday afternoon and Monday night. A ridge of upper level high pressure will build in from the west starting Tuesday of next week for a period of dry weather. Models over the past few days have been trending towards a big low moving out of the Gulf of Alaska, digging southeastward into California the first couple days of March. So it appears March may come in like a lion this year.

Forecast: Variable mainly mid and high level clouds through tonight with patchy fog this morning. mostly clear Saturday through Sunday. Increasing cloudiness Sunday night. cloudy Monday and Monday night with a slight chance of showers Monday morning. showers becoming likely Monday afternoon through Monday night. mostly clear Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Forecast:  February 28 through March 5: This model shows the potential for storms to move out  of the Gulf of Alaska and into the Pacific Northwest and California. It does not depict above or below average rainfall but does suggest below average temperatures for a change.

Thirty Day Report: This model depicts temperatures near to marginally above average during this time frame. A good chance of above average precipitation will continue through the month as the El Nino pattern continues.

Ninety Day Report: This model favors the storm track being much further south than in most years, resulting in above average precipitation. temperatures on this model are also negligibly above average.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through at least Sunday night. There is a small chance of showers Monday morning with showers becoming likely Monday afternoon and Monday night. Unlike the last system, this storm will be fairly short lived with dry weather Tuesday through Friday of next week. models are a bit more bullish on rainfall amounts for the valley. Most estimates are in the range of ¼ to 1/3 of an inch over the southern half of the valley.
