March 27, 2024 report

March 27, 2024

Summary  Today will be the warmest afternoon of the week as the backside of high pressure aloft moves overhead. To our north, a low center is off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and will develop a trough into northern and central California tonight. This trough will spread light precipitation over the northern half of California tonight and Thursday morning with a chance of showers as far south as Kern County. A very temporary ridge of high pressure will follow with a slot of dry weather Thursday afternoon through Friday. A stronger low will drop southward along the California coast Friday, centering just west of the Golden Gate Friday night. models still project this to be a coastal hugger as it moves slowly down the central coast. Bands of energy will rotate inland Saturday, resulting in periods of rain. Isolated thunderstorms will  be possible Saturday afternoon and evening, especially if we get breaks in the overcast. wind may also be a factor in this evening as fairly significant differences in pressure show up between a surface low just west of San Francisco and higher pressure over t he Great Basin and Southern California. By Saturday night the low will be centered just to the west of Vandenburg, finally moving inland through northern Baja Monday. high pressure will then take over for dry weather through the middle of next week.

Forecast  Mostly clear this morning. increasing cloudiness this afternoon. Rain becoming likely, mainly after midnight and continued Thursday morning. mostly cloudy Thursday afternoon through Friday. Rain likely at times Friday night through Saturday night. isolated thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon and evening. A chance of a few showers Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday. mostly clear Monday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Forecast:  April 3 through April 9: This model shows a rather robust flow into California. Energy from the northeast Pacific moves into California from time to time. The chance of rain is relatively high during this period with below average temperatures.

Thirty Day Report: If this model has much credence, rainfall will remain above average, especially in northern and central California, stretching into the interior west. Temperatures however, look to be marginally below average.

Ninety Day Report: This model indicates near to marginally above average rainfall over the next three months. Equal chances are given for temperatures being above or below average.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the southeast at 5 to 12 mph through tonight. Winds Thursday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph through Thursday night. winds Friday night through Saturday will be mainly out of the southeast at 15 to 20 mph at times. Gusts to 30 mph are possible, mainly along the west side and from Fresno County north. There is a small chance of gusty winds in the extreme south valley out of the east to southeast at 15 to 20 mph. wind gusts to 40 mph are possible late Friday and Friday night. winds will decrease and become fairly light Saturday night.

Rain: The chance for rain will again increase tonight, mainly north of Kern County. This will be a fast mover so any showers will end by noon Thursday. A short period of dry weather will commence Thursday afternoon through Friday. Rain will spread over the valley again Friday night, continuing through Saturday night. There’s a chance of showers Sunday, ending Sunday evening. Thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts, according to high resolution models, may be fairly high with between one-half and one inch north of Kern County, between one-quarter and one-third in Kern County. A period of dry weather will begin Monday and will last through the middle of next week.
