April 16, 2024 report

April 16, 2024

Summary  We are now entering into a prolonged period of dry, stable weather.  It looks like we’ve finally broken the spine of a long, active wet season. Fresno has recorded 9.64 inches of rain so far this season, which is 98% of average.  Bakersfield has tallied 10.73 inches of rain which is 117% of average. As we peruse the Golden State for rainfall amounts, most locations are running 100% to 170% of average. What’s highly unusual is to have two rainfall seasons in a row with above average precipitation. This season can be held responsible by an El Nino pattern while last year, the wetter of the two, was simply a fluke. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a whole string of years with above average precipitation? Back to reality. A high center is located several hundred miles off the central coast and will be shifting inland over the next 72 hours. Unlike the pattern of recent months where highs are replaced by lows, we now have a regime where high pressure will anchor over and off the west coast for a prolonged period of warm, dry weather. Mid to upper 80s look like a good bet from Thursday and at least through Wednesday of next week.

Forecast Mostly clear skies through Friday. Mostly clear skies will continue Friday through Tuesday of next week.
