Summary: By the standards of August, a fairly significant trough of low pressure is currently moving into northern California.  There is a swath of cloud cover from roughly Stockton northward which will clip central California today as the trough digs further south.  The marine layer has deepened to roughly 3,000 feet and is surging through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the Coast Range.  This, in conjunction with falling pressures aloft, will result in a much cooler day today with further cooling Tuesday as the trough digs into southern California.  Some locations Tuesday will likely remain below the 90 degree mark.  No active weather is expected with this trough with the exception of possible isolated thunderstorms along the Sierra Nevada.

Wednesday will be turnaround day as the trough moves eastward, allowing upper level high pressure off shore to interconnect with another high over the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures will be somewhat warmer Wednesday with the warming trend accelerating Thursday and Friday.  it does not appear at this time that excessively hot weather will make a come back any time soon.  For now, it also appears the monsoon will remain south and east of central California.

Two Week Outlook: August 21 through August 27:  This model indicates a trough of low pressure will be off shore during the early part of the period.  It will then form another low over Nevada.  This poses little if any chance of precipitation, but it would maintain a westerly flow with a possibly deep marine layer which would allow temperatures to slide a bit below average.

August:  This model shows a significant trough of low pressure east of the Rockies and overall fairly strong high pressure dominating the western third of the U.S.  This should create above average temperatures for the month with a chance of the return of the monsoon from time to time.  Generally, temperatures will be above average with a slight chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms.

August, September, October:  The trend towards above average temperatures shows up once again through at least August and September.  October is more iffy.  As far as precipitation is concerned, conditions will remain near average.  Remember, the real rainfall season doesn’t begin until November so no significant amounts of precipitation are seen at this time.

Winds: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest through Tuesday at 10 to 15 MPH, however local gusts to 30 MPH are possible along the west side, especially below mountain passes.  Winds Wednesday and Thursday will be generally less than 15 MPH.

Rain: Expect dry weather for the foreseeable future.
