Forecast

September 18, 2017

September 18, 2017

Summary:  The newest trough of low pressure is now moving into the Pacific Northwest with showers over Washington and Oregon and increasing clouds over far northern California.  Today will be a bit cooler as a relatively strong on shore flow is in place.  The marine layer is roughly 3,000 feet deep and will cool the northern part of the valley significantly and bring the central and south valley below 90 degrees this afternoon.

On Tuesday, as a trough moves through California, temperatures will be noticeably cooler and will struggle to reach the 80 degree mark in most areas.  Only slight warming will occur Wednesday along the back side of the trough.

The pattern becomes more dicey Thursday and Friday.  a significant trough of low pressure will spread showers over parts of northern California and the Sierra Nevada.  Snow showers are likely over the high Sierra down to about 8,000 feet or so.  As the trough moves inland, we can expect gusty winds Thursday and Friday, especially along the west side as marine air surges inland.

If all goes as planned, temperatures will drop into the low to mid 70s Thursday through Saturday with overnight lows dropping into the mid to upper 40s in the colder locations for the first time this season.

By Sunday, weak upper level high pressure will move in from the west, moving temperatures slowly upward.  It may be Tuesday of next week before temperatures return to near average values.

In the longer term, the two week outlook is now calling for dry weather and above average temperatures for the last week of September.

Forecast:  Mostly clear through Wednesday night with a cooling trend.  Partly cloudy Thursday and Friday and much cooler, breezy at times.  Mostly clear Saturday through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: September 25 through October 1:  This model reverts back to a ridge pattern with high pressure being dominant over the western United States.  This would dry temperatures to above and possibly well above average during this time frame with little chance of precipitation.

September:  This model shows upper level high pressure more dominant over the western U.S.  There’s no clear indicator of above or below average rainfall as we move into the fall season.  With that in mind, we’ll call for near average precipitation for the month.

September, October, November:  It appears temperatures overall will rise to above average values for the bulk of this time frame.  Upper level high pressure is also more dominant with precipitation, believe it or not, predicted to be somewhat near average.

Winds: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH with stronger gusts along the west side through Wednesday.  Winds Wednesday night and Thursday will be out of the northwest at 15 to 25 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH possible, mainly along the west side.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 5 to 10 days.
