October 24, 2017 report

October 24, 2017

Summary: Temperatures are running 5 to 7 degrees warmer this morning than yesterday at this time.  Readings will move well into the mid to upper 80s at most locations this afternoon with lower 90s possible in Kern County as downslope winds off the Kern County mountains compress, causing heat.  Speaking of heat, the temperature at John Wayne Airport in Orange County this morning was 93 degrees as of 6:00am with most locations in the LA Basin ranging in the mid to upper 80s.

A strong Santa Ana wind configuration is in place.  The surface pressure over northern Nevada was 1038 millibars compared to 1016 millibars in LA.  This 22 millibar difference in pressure is causing the off shore flow which will continue through tonight before weakening Wednesday.  The other aspect of our weather is a massive upper high covering the eastern Pacific Ocean and about 1/3 of the western U.S.  This high will dominate our pattern through the weekend.

The next cooling trend will begin Sunday and Monday of next week as a system  moves into the Rocky Mountain region, generating an on shore flow.  This will weaken the high.  Even so, dry conditions will continue with somewhat above average temperatures next week.

Forecast:  Mostly clear skies through Friday.  Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: October 31 through November 6:  This model has reverted back to a dry pattern over California.  Upper level high pressure is again the dominant feature.  The chance of rain during this time frame is extremely low.

November:  November is when the traditional rainfall season begins.  For now, it appears this month will be drier than average as upper level high pressure is depicted as more dominant over the Desert Southwest through southern California.  This would keep the storm track, for the most part, north of our region, and would also, on the average, result in above average temperatures.

November, December, January:  It appears this model is leaning towards above average precipitation perhaps over the Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies.  Higher than average pressure will continue over the Desert Southwest to the southern Midwest.  There is really no strong signature for above or below precipitation, but temperatures during the winter months should be at least marginally above average.

Winds:  Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH through Friday with periods of near calm conditions, especially during the night and morning hours.

Rain: Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
