December 6, 2017
Summary: Temperatures are anywhere from 4 to 6 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago, but on the other hand, dew points are down anywhere from 1 to 6 degrees. More in the frost discussion below.
A gigantic upper high is centered over the Pacific Northwest and engulfs all of western Canada and the western United States with no cloud cover whatsoever from Washington State to northern Baja. A shallow layer of dry air remains trapped on the valley floor. High pressure by nature involves descending air which caps the valley. Expect haze to increase, but fog is unlikely with the possible exception of river bottom and low lying spots.
Models going out from Friday through Sunday show the center of the high dropping into northern California which means the high over central California will strengthen further due to surface high pressure over the Great Basin. All this means is the off shore flow will continue with gusty easterly winds over the high Sierra and the Kern County mountains. Unfortunately, the Santa Ana winds will continue in southern California.
Models for next week continue to indicate little change for next week in this amplified pattern. Above average daytime highs will continue with below average overnight lows. It still appears no precip will occur through the middle of the month.
Forecast: Clear skies through Sunday. Mostly clear skies will continue Sunday night through Wednesday.

Winds: Winds will be less than10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Information: Temperatures have warmed up nicely this afternoon and will reach into at least the mid 60s with upper 60s in Kern County. Counterbalancing this is the fact that dew points are 1 to 6 degrees lower than 24 hours ago. Temperatures have a longer way to go during the radiational cooling process tonight because of those warmer highs. Still, I believe coldest locations will chill into the 26 to 27 degree range with most other locations between 28 to 31. Hillsides will be above freezing.
The inversion tonight will be strong with temperatures at 34 feet anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees warmer. Friday morning will be similar, possibly a degree or two milder as daytime highs continue to warm. Over the weekend, readings will range from 28 to 35 with only coldest locations dipping into the upper 20s.
Mild and very dry conditions will continue next week so colder locations will continue to dip below freezing with most other locations between 33 and 37. Medium range models show the same pattern through mid December.
