Summary: Strong upper level high pressure extends from southern California with a huge ridge building far into the Yukon Territory of Canada.  East of this high, cold air continues to plummet into the middle of the country.  This high has the valley completely capped under a warm air inversion with dry air on the valley floor.  This is the perfect set up for strong radiational cooling with widespread mid to upper 20s last night throughout the citrus belt.  Surface high pressure is also centered over the Great Basin which continues to generate a strong off shore flow with the Santa Anas cranked up over southern California.

Models show very little change in this pattern for the next week to possibly ten days.  Models going out to December 16 indicate a blocking ridge of high pressure will continue with no chance of rain.

Forecast:   Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Sunday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  December 12 through December 18:  This model shows a big ridge over the west and a big cold trough east of the Rockies.  This pattern is very unfavorable for rain, but it is favorable for above average temperatures and areas of night and morning fog.

December:  This model is indicating a better than even chance of above average temperatures for central and southern California all the way to the southeast with near to below average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model does show better than average precip over Washington and Oregon and near average rainfall over central and northern California.

December, January, February:  If this model is to be believed, winter this year will experience somewhat above average temperatures from California, stretching eastward and southward.  Below average temperatures would prevail from the northern Rockies through the Plains states.  As far as California is concerned, precipitation would be near to marginally below average with temperatures marginally above average, but take all this with a grain of salt.

Winds:  Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to possibly ten days.

Frost:  Temperatures were a few degrees colder last night as widespread mid to upper 20s were evident throughout the citrus belt.  Tonight will be similar with mid to upper 20s and low to mid 30s over hillsides.

Daytime highs will slowly creep up beginning today with widespread low to mid 60s.  warmest readings will be in Kern County.  By Friday, temperatures in Kern County may reach 70 with mid to upper 60s elsewhere.

With warming during the day, overnight lows will start to slowly be dragged up, but will still remain below freezing through the weekend.  With a little big of luck, readings next week should bottom out in the low to mid 30s at most locations.

For tonight, however, coldest locales will drop down to 24 to 26 degrees in unprotected locations.  Most flatland locations will range between 26 and 31 with hillsides above freezing.  The inversion tonight should be decent with temperatures 4 to 7 degrees warmer at 34 feet.
