December 10, 2017
Summary: Visible satellite imagery is quite interesting this afternoon. It shows not only high, thin clouds moving into the southern half of the valley, but these clouds are thin enough to allow you to see the smoke from the Ventura fire moving northward right along the central coast. From there, it heads westward out over the Pacific.
Strong upper level high pressure remains in place along the west coast with a very dry easterly surface pattern. This will continue through Tuesday. There is a cut off low off northern Baja which will continue to spin high clouds out over the area. They may be thick enough at times to slow the radiational cooling process in Kern County and possibly Tulare County, but if I were a betting man, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Models show the high moving out to sea, but with a ridge still jutting northeastward into the western states. So, there’s no chance of rain through at least the next week and quite possibly ten days.
Forecast: Occasional periods of high clouds, otherwise it will be mostly clear through Tuesday. Mostly clear skies Tuesday night through Sunday.

Winds: Winds will be less than10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Wednesday.
Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next seven to ten days.
Frost Information: Believe it or not, dew points are a bit higher this afternoon than they were yesterday at this time. Most locations are reporting dew points in the mid to upper 30s which is the highest I’ve seen them for the past week and a half or so. Still, strong radiational cooling will occur tonight with coldest locations down to 27 to 28 degrees, flatland terrain in the 28 to 32 degree range. Hillsides, as usual, will be above freezing. Most locations in Kern County will be above freezing due to weak downsloping off the Tehachapi Mountains.
High clouds continue to move northward over the south valley, but again, it ‘s doubtful they’ll be thick enough to slow the radiational cooling process.
The inversion tonight will again be decent with temperatures at 34 feet from 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations.
I don’t anticipate much change in low temperatures over the next couple of days as generally clear skies with occasional high clouds will prevail. I still believe upper 20s and low to mid 30s will be the rule through Wednesday and possibly longer.
