January 9, 2018
Summary: The center of circulation of this monster storm is right over Los Angeles and is quickly moving eastward. Heaviest rain is in Ventura and LA Counties which have already been hit hard by several inches of rain. Of course, there are mudslides to go along with that. Here in the valley, showers are wrapping around the top of the low and are mainly in Madera and Fresno Counties at this hour. This activity will move southeastward over the next couple of hours, so shower activity and even an isolated thunderstorm or two are possible through the late evening hours.
By midnight, the low will be moving into Arizona, ending the precipitation from northwest to southeast during the early morning hours. There will be abundant upslope clouds against the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the valley facing slopes of the Kern County mountains. Clearing will be slow Wednesday with the exception of the west side. The eastern and southern portions of the valley may very well remain mostly cloudy through Thursday morning.
Thursday afternoon and beyond will be dry, for at least the next week, anyway, and possibly ten days as a strong ridge builds off shore and over California. The main challenge, especially beginning Friday morning, will be increasing amounts of fog and low clouds. Temperatures during the weekend and beyond will be determined primarily by fog coverage. So all of a sudden, we’re back to a more average winter scenario with fog in the valley and beautiful weather elsewhere.
Forecast: Mostly cloudy tonight with scattered showers, mainly before midnight. Mostly to partly cloudy Wednesday into Thursday morning. Mostly clear Thursday afternoon and on through Tuesday with increasing amounts of night and morning valley fog.
