Memorial Day 2018/report

May 28, 2018

Summary: Forty eight hours ago, the freezing level was 8,400 feet.  The latest reading taken overnight at Vandenberg was 14,500 feet.  Obviously, much warmer air has moved in aloft in association with building upper level high pressure building eastward behind a weakening low centered near the Nevada/Utah border.  Temperatures will take a big jump today, moving into the low to mid 90s.  this temporary ridge of high pressure will be overhead Tuesday, driving the warmest locations near the century mark.  This is a progressive high, meaning it will be on the move, shifting eastward Wednesday.  Meanwhile, a developing trough of low pressure will move into California Wednesday night and Thursday for a significant cooling trend.  The only active weather with this trough will be scattered thunderstorms afternoons and evenings Wednesday through Friday over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.  In other words, temperatures will fall from the century mark Tuesday back into the 80s Thursday and Friday.  Only minor warming will occur over the weekend as a lingering trough of low pressure remains over the western states and off shore.  In fact,  models going out much of next week are indicating lower than average pressures aloft, maintaining fairly seasonal conditions for the next seven to ten days.

Forecast: Mostly clear and warmer through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday through Friday with a cooling trend.  Mostly clear Friday night through Monday.  Winds will be light through Wednesday morning then will begin to pick up out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH by late afternoon.  Winds Wednesday night and Thursday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts, especially in western Fresno and Kings Counties.

Temperatures: High temperatures today will warm into the low to mid 90s, cooling into the low to mid 60s tonight.  Temperatures Tuesday will warm into the upper 90s to near 100, falling into the  mid to upper 60s Tuesday night, backing off into the low to mid 90s Wednesday.
