June 4, 2018/report

June 4, 2018

Summary: All reporting stations yesterday reported temperatures at or above the 100 degree mark.  The hottest were Lemoore at 104 and Bakersfield at 105.  Temperatures will slowly begin to come down today, but you probably won’t notice it until tomorrow.  The upper high responsible for the short lived heat wave is moving eastward in response to a low center dropping southward into the Pacific Northwest.  Over the next 72 hours, this low will form a weak trough over and off the west coast.  The first change will begin today, which will be mainly synoptic, or weakening pressures aloft.  The second phase will be a deepening marine layer which is currently only 1,100 feet deep with only a minimal amount of sea breeze moving through the Delta at this time.  By this evening, the marine layer will have deepened and will make its move down the valley.  We can expect increasing northwesterly winds tonight and Tuesday, especially along the west side where gusts to 25 to 30 MPH will be possible.  This will be especially true below Cottonwood Pass and Pacheco Pass.  Temperatures will drop back to almost average tomorrow and will remain fairly seasonal through the work week.  Seasonal averages this time of year are right around the 90 degree mark.  There are model differences for the pattern over the weekend, but the main consensus is that a weak trough will remain along the west coast with a big high center over Texas, putting California in a dry west to southwest flow aloft.  Next week might be somewhat hotter.  Some models indicate the trough will dissipate with higher pressure moving in.  for now, however, there are enough model differences to pretty much call for typical early June weather, mainly generally clear skies and near average temperatures.

Forecast: Clear skies through Thursday with a cooling trend.   Mostly clear skies will continue Thursday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 11 through June 17:  This model shows a trough of low pressure moving into the western states and remaining for a few days.  Temperatures under this pattern would lower to near seasonal values.  There will be no chance of precipitation.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be  no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: winds will be generally light this morning.  Later this afternoon, winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with gusts near 30 MPH possible below the passes along the west side.  Winds will continue out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH through Tuesday, decreasing to 5 to 15 MPH Tuesday night through Thursday with locally stronger gusts.
