June 13, 2018

Summary: Upper level high pressure is almost right overhead this morning and will drive temperatures above the century mark at most locations.  The freezing level is fairly typical for early summer and stands at 15,400 feet.  The marine layer has actually deepened a little, but is still pretty shallow at 1,500 feet.  It will  not have any influence on valley temperatures today.

As we speak, however, a low center is entering into the Pacific Northwest.  It will weaken pressures aloft slightly on Thursday and slowly deepen the marine layer to the point where that  modified sea breeze will be moving through the Delta and eventually through other gaps and passes along the Coast Range by late Thursday afternoon.  This air will probably arrive too late to prevent temperatures from at least teasing with the 100 degree mark Thursday.  As the low to our north begins to stretch a trough down into northern California Friday, it will turn noticeably cooler as the air aloft begins to cool and more and more marine air surges inland.

In the meantime, to our south we have rapidly weakening Hurricane Bud whose winds will decrease down to 75 MPH.  the last update on Bud showed the center of circulation 270 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas.  This storm will be near the southern tip of Baja Friday morning then will move into northwest Mexico Saturday.  It’s possible moisture may spread as far north as the Imperial Valley.  However, the winds aloft over central California will remain out of the southwest, keeping moisture from Bud to our south and east.

Medium range models tend to keep a weak trough of low pressure over and along the west coast for much of next week.  This time of year, that would tend to keep temperatures moderate through at least Wednesday and possibly beyond.

Two Week Outlook:  June 19 through June 25: This model is in line with an early summer type pattern.  Upper level high pressure will be over the eastern Pacific and California with another high center over the southern Midwest.  Typically, this would result in somewhat above average temperatures and the flow aloft will be out of the southwest, meaning typically dry conditions will continue.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through tonight.  Winds by later Thursday afternoon will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side and continuing at times Thursday night through Saturday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely
