June 14, 2018/Next report: June 26
Summary: The hottest temperature yesterday afternoon in the valley was 105 at Bakersfield. All locations either hit or rose above the century mark. Today will again be hot, even though temperatures will begin to slowly cool down. There is a developing low over the Pacific Northwest which will eventually move to a position near the California/Oregon border Saturday and somewhere near northwest Nevada on Sunday. Currently the marine layer is only 1,500 feet deep, but an onshore flow has begun. Winds at Fairfield in the Delta are sustained at 21, gusting to 28 MPH. the marine influence will arrive too late to have much impact today and only a minor impact Friday.
Over the weekend and into next week, temperatures will drop into the mid to upper 80s as the marine layer deepens and surges inland. At the upper levels of the atmosphere, conditions will slowly moderate, as well.
Meanwhile, to our south we have Tropical Storm Bud which, as of 3:00am was located 115 miles south of Cabo San Lucas. Bud will cross the southern Baja peninsula tonight and by Saturday will be falling apart over northwest Mexico. Models continue to show Bud’s moisture being fed into mostly eastern Mexico and New Mexico. Satellite imagery is currently showing mid and high level clouds moving into the Imperial Valley with another batch of clouds off the southern California coast. With the developing low to our north, the winds aloft will become westerly Friday and northwesterly over the weekend, keeping all the tropical juice well to our south.
For much of next week, that same low we alluded to earlier will set up shop over the Great Basin. We should enjoy mid to upper 80s through Tuesday and then perhaps low to mid 90s from Wednesday on as the low finally shifts eastward. The two week model shows an active monsoon in the Deseret Southwest, too far to the southeast to affect central California with temperatures probably near to marginally above average.

Two Week Outlook: June 19 through June 25: This model is in line with an early summer type pattern. Upper level high pressure will be over the eastern Pacific and California with another high center over the southern Midwest. Typically, this would result in somewhat above average temperatures and the flow aloft will be out of the southwest, meaning typically dry conditions will continue.
June: As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical. Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.
June, July, August: All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry. This summer will be no exception. If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average. The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Winds: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH through tonight. Winds Friday through Sunday will periodically be out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts, especially in western Fresno and Kings Counties.
Rain: Expect dry conditions indefinitely
