June 29, 2018

Summary: The valley is pooled with a shallow layer of marine air this morning.  This has resulted in pleasant overnight lows with many locations dropping below the 60 degree mark.  The marine air will mix out today, but will still keep temperatures in the mid 90s.  the marine layer itself is 2,000 feet deep, but barometers off shore and over the interior west are roughly the same so there is no mechanism to tug the sea breeze inland any further.

Strong upper level high pressure is located several hundred miles off the northern California coast and will push inland over the weekend, resulting in another round of triple digits.  Highest temperatures, especially Sunday, at the hottest locations will top out at 104 to 107 then will begin to back off a bit Monday as a new low center begins to take shape over the Pacific Northwest.  By Tuesday and Wednesday, it will have formed a trough which will  move through central California, repeating the process of tugging in a deep marine layer and moderate temperatures. It’s possible low to mid 90s will greet us for the Fourth of July.

After Wednesday, a typical summertime pattern will begin with a strong high developing over the Four Corners region, expanding westward into California.  This is a hot pattern so we could begin to see some of the hottest temperatures of the year so far about a week from Saturday.  Also, this pattern, if it sets up correctly, will generate a southeast flow aloft which could begin to move monsoon  moisture up the Sierra Nevada for possible afternoon and evening thunderstorms.  This potential pattern is still more than a week away, so we’ll tweak it as we move along.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Monday.  Mostly clear Monday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 6 through July 12:  For the past couple of model runs, there has been an indication of a strong  high over the Four Corners region setting up a southeastern flow over southern and central California.  This would favor monsoon moisture moving into central California, however precipitation is typically confined to the mountain areas.  However, on rare occasions measurable rain occurs on the valley floor.  For now, I’m  not calling for this, but just explaining a pattern change which will also result in above average temperatures.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Monday and generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely
