Forecast

June 28, 2018/report

June 28, 2018

Summary: Temperatures this morning are running 3 to 6 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago courtesy of the marine layer and a fairly decent on shore flow.  The marine layer is 2,500 feet deep this morning and, with roughly a 9 mb difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas, the sea breeze is jetting over the coastal mountains and through the Delta into the valley.  Lower 100s were widespread again yesterday but today, look for readings to fall generally into the mid 90s, which is close to average for late June.

The weak trough of low pressure responsible for the cool down will begin to move into the Great Basin Friday.  This will allow upper level high pressure off the Pacific coast to begin to move eastward over California.  Temperatures as a result will soar into triple digits over the weekend with Sunday being the hottest day.  It appears hottest locations will top out at about 106 or so.  As has been the pattern, a new, weak trough of low pressure will develop over the Pacific Northwest early next week, effectively slowing the downward trend of temperatures.  For now, it appears mid to upper 90s will be a good bet from Tuesday on as pressures weaken somewhat aloft and allow a weak stream of marine air to move down the valley.

Looking out two weeks, we could see the development of a four corners high which could begin to move mid and high level moisture in from the southeast.  This is by no means a surety, but definitely worth tracking.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Sunday.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 4 through July 10:  This model is indicating temperatures will be near to perhaps marginally above average.  It’s hinting that the monsoon will make a triumphant return during the first week in July, affecting mainly the Desert Southwest, although it does point to southeast California possibly becoming involved.  So, we’ll continue with dry weather through the period.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds:  Winds will be generally out of the  northwest today and tonight at 10 to 15 MPH with local gusts to near 25 MPH, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds Friday through Sunday will be generally at or less than 15 MPH and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.
