Forecast

July 10, 2018/report

July 10, 2018

Summary: The dividing line between a dry, southwesterly flow over northern California and a moist, southeast flow over central California is right about at Madera County.  Northern California is essentially cloud free while variable cloudiness covers central and southern California.  In southern California, there are a few light showers pretty much left after yesterday’s thunderstorms.  Upper level high pressure remains unabated over the Desert Southwest.  Models show the high expanding further towards the northwest and, as it expands, the monsoonal flow will begin to work into northern California, as well.

Scattered thunderstorms will be a daily  occurrence over the Sierra Nevada each day for the remainder of the week.  There will also be a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Kern County mountains.  On the valley floor, we will observe variable cloudiness from time to time.  It’s possible a sprinkle or two could occur, mainly during the late afternoon and evening hours.

As we move into the weekend, upper level high pressure will essentially cover about 80% of the lower 48.  One center will be parked over the Mississippi Valley while another settles in right over California.  The bottom line is that the hot weather we’re currently experiencing will become hotter over the weekend and into next week with probably a lesser amount of monsoon moisture.  Even so, isolated thunderstorms will continue over the Sierra well into next week.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness at times through Thursday.  Mostly clear to possibly occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Tuesday with hot afternoons.  Welcome to July!

Two Week Outlook:  July 17 through July 23:  This model indicates a continuation of persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest and California.  This pattern will favor monsoon moisture moving into our region from time to time for partly cloudy skies.  Thunderstorms will also be possible each day over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the Kern County mountains.  Temperatures will range above seasonal values.

July:  This model is indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest will be stronger than usual.  A fairly active monsoon is also indicated for periods of thunderstorms over the Sierra and hotter than average temperatures over the valley floor.

July, August, September:  Like the 30 day outlook, this model is indicating we’ll have a hot summer, moving into the early fall.  Above average precipitation is possible over southern California and the Sierra Nevada due to an active monsoon season with temperatures remaining generally above average for the next three months.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Friday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely

Afternoon Dew Points Today: Low to mid 50s.  Kern: Mid to upper 40s.
