Forecast

July 13, 2018/report

July 13, 2018

Summary: Thunderstorms yesterday afternoon drifted off the Sierra Nevada and fell apart.  However, there was enough moisture for a few sprinkles at a few locations, but nothing measurable.  The main batch of monsoon  moisture has now moved into northern California with the southern limit of the cloud cover moving up to Fresno County.  This cloud cover will continue to slowly move northward today, allowing for generally clear skies over the valley.  The flow aloft remains out of the southeast, but has dried up.

Upper level high pressure will build over California beginning today with its center just off the southern California coast.  It will continue to be somewhere near that location through Sunday.  The southeast winds will gradually become out of the southwest by Monday.  This is not favorable for the monsoon to move into central California.  There will be enough available moisture for a daily chance of scattered thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada.

By Tuesday, the winds will again begin to veer out of the southeast as a strong high center develops over the Four Corners region.  That will be more favorable for another round of monsoon moisture to move in from the southeast.  By next Saturday, the strong high will park over the southwest for above average temperatures and a daily chance of thunderstorms over the mountains.

From now through next week, temperatures will remain above average with daily triple digit readings for daytime highs.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy for a time this  morning from Fresno County north.   Mostly clear elsewhere.  Mostly clear this afternoon through Tuesday with occasional cloudiness.  Partly cloudy Wednesday through Friday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 20 through July 26:  This model indicates a continuation of persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest and California.  This pattern will favor monsoon moisture moving into our region from time to time for partly cloudy skies.  Thunderstorms will also be possible each day over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the Kern County mountains.  Temperatures will range above seasonal values.

July:  This model is indicating high pressure over the Desert Southwest will be stronger than usual.  A fairly active monsoon is also indicated for periods of thunderstorms over the Sierra and hotter than average temperatures over the valley floor.

July, August, September:  Like the 30 day outlook, this model is indicating we’ll have a hot summer, moving into the early fall.  Above average precipitation is possible over southern California and the Sierra Nevada due to an active monsoon season with temperatures remaining generally above average for the next three months.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH through Monday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely
