Forecast

September 22, 2018/report

Summary:  Upper level high pressure extends from the eastern Pacific eastward over California and into the Desert Southwest.  A low center is developing near Vancouver Island which will eventually extend a very weak trough down into northern California.  The marine layer has deepened a little over the past 24 hours and is now at 1,200 feet while the freezing level has nudged up a bit to 15,300 feet.  The pressure gradient between the coast and the interior is still not strong enough to begin to pull that sea breeze inland.  That will change Monday as that low to our north moves eastward into the Great Basin.  Mid 90s will be widespread this afternoon and possibly Sunday afternoon, as well.

With a bit of luck, we should see the marine layer push down the valley Monday for a minor cooling trend.  By minor, I mean temperatures falling to near seasonal averages which are now in the upper 80s.  that little cool down, however, will not last long as a high will build along the west coast northward to off the coast of the Pacific Northwest.  Models continue to show the formation of a low pressure system well off the northern California coast by midweek.  This feature, when it finally moves inland, is too far to the north to have much impact on the valley other than to begin to lower temperatures a bit again.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Tuesday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Tuesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 27 through October 3:  This model depicts a cool trough of low pressure east of the Rockies and upper level high pressure over and along the west coast.  This should result in dry weather and above average temperatures.

September:  This model indicates there will be a higher than active monsoon over the Desert Southwest and possibly central and southern California.  This typically does not affect the valley floor other than cloud cover but could result in a larger number of days of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and possibly even the Kern County mountains.  With generally high pressure over the southwest, temperatures will likely be somewhat above seasonal average.

September, October, November:  The first part of this time frame will see a more active than usual monsoon in place for above average rain over the Sierra Nevada and possibly the mountains and deserts of southern California.  October and November’s conditions aren’t as easy to determine.  At this time we’ll call for generally average values for both rain and temperatures.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly less than 12 MPH through Tuesday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
