Forecast

April 11, 2019/report

April 11, 2019

Summary: We call them “inside sliders”.  What that is, is a storm system that moves through the Pacific Northwest then drops into the Great Basin.  This will happen again today and once again later Monday  night and Tuesday.  Typically, these systems result in the valley remaining dry with a chance of rain or snow showers over the Sierra Nevada and, with a strong push of northwest air behind it, light showers will be possible over the Kern County mountains late this afternoon and tonight.  The main impact on the valley floor will be increased cloudiness today through tonight and another round of gusty northwesterly winds.  Winds along the west side of the valley this afternoon and evening will gust to between 25 and 35 MPH with locally stronger gusts.  Elsewhere, winds will generally be in the 10 to 20 MPH range with the possibility of stronger gusts.

A flat zone of upper level high pressure will begin to push inland from the eastern Pacific Friday for generally clear skies and a warming trend.  By Saturday, warmest locations will again be approaching the 80 degree mark with Sunday and Monday experiencing possible widespread low to  mid 80s.

The second inside slider will drop into Nevada late Monday into Tuesday with another chance of showers over the Sierra with gusty winds on the valley floor.  Wednesday through next weekend will be dry.  In fact, it appears a large ridge will develop along the west coast, extending northward into southwest Canada.

The medium range outlook going out through the 24th is indicating a strong high will be over the west with above average temperatures and dry conditions.

Forecast: Increasing cloudiness today.  Variable cloudiness tonight.  Becoming mostly clear Friday with the exception of Kern County and portions of Tulare County which may remain mostly cloudy well into Friday morning.  Mostly clear Friday afternoon through Monday.  Increasing cloudiness late Monday night with variable cloudiness Tuesday and breezy conditions.  Clearing Tuesday night.  mostly clear Wednesday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  April 18 through April 24:  A persistent ridge of upper level high pressure is projected to anchor over the eastern Pacific and the western third of the U.S., driving temperatures above average.  Expect dry conditions.

April: This model shows April will be fairly typical with near to marginally above average temperatures during the month.  This model also indicates there will be equal chances of above or below average precipitation. In other words, the road map on this model is rather vague.

April, May, June: Like the April projection, this model really has no dominant features that would indicate either above or below average temperatures, although the overall pattern should result in marginally above average readings.  We are moving into the dry season, and this model indicates equal chances of above or below average rainfall.  As we move forward, this will become a moot point.

Winds:  Winds will be generally less than 15 MPH through midmorning then increase out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH this afternoon and evening with gusts to 35 MPH possible from Fresno County north and along the west side.  After midnight, winds will generally be in the 5 to 10 MPH range.  Friday through Sunday, winds will be generally at or less than 15 MPH and mostly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  The next round of gusty winds will be late Monday night through Tuesday night.

Rain: Dry weather will prevail for possibly the next week to ten days.  There will be a chance of showers this afternoon through tonight over the Sierra and the Kern County mountains with similar conditions Tuesday and Tuesday night.
