June 18, 2019
Summary: A benign upper level low is located just west of Los Angeles this morning. High pressure in the upper atmosphere is centered several hundred miles off the northern California coast with a ridge extending inland through Oregon and northern California. The combination of these two features has the winds aloft out of the northeast. Thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada will be more isolated this afternoon, but even so, tops of these storms may make it out over the San Joaquin Valley from midafternoon through the evening hours before dissipating.
The proximity of the high off the northern California coast is close enough to drive temperatures well above average through Wednesday. Triple digits will be commonplace both today and tomorrow before backing off a bit Thursday. By Thursday night and Friday, a low will develop over the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies with a trough into the Great Basin. This will drive the high further off shore, creating a north/northwest flow aloft and pumping cooler air in aloft. Also, the weak off shore flow currently underway will turn onshore, flooding the valley with marine air Thursday night and Friday, causing temperatures to tumble to below average. Only marginal warming will occur over the weekend as a broad area of low pressure will remain over the interior west.
Models also show an even stronger trough over the western states by the middle of next week. This should lead to several days of below average temperatures. The flow aloft for most of next week will be out of the west/northwest which is a dry flow this time of year.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Saturday. Continued to be mostly clear Saturday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: June 24 through June 30: This model has flip flopped a bit and indicates a trough of low pressure will be the more dominant feature during this time frame. If this happens, a welcome cooling trend will occur with temperatures near to possibly marginally below average with the usual dry conditions continuing.
June: The first month of meteorological summer indicates temperatures will only be marginally above average over northern and central California. In other words, patterns for early summer should be fairly typical. The usual generally dry conditions will prevail.
June, July, August: If this model has any grip at all on the pattern for summer of 2019, it is the fact that it will be a hot one, even hotter than usual. As a more persistent ridge remains over the west and lower pressure over the middle of the country the usual generally dry conditions will prevail.
Winds: Winds through Wednesday will be at or less than 15 MPH and generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings. During the night through midmorning hours, winds will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions. Winds Thursday through Friday will pick up out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts, mainly along the west side.
Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
