June 20, 2019

Summary: The marine layer doubled in depth overnight from 1,5000 feet yesterday to over 3,000 feet this morning.  There is a developing significant pressure difference between the coast and the interior which is resulting in a very strong surge of marine air inland.  In the Delta, winds at Travis Air Force Base were sustained at 24, gusting to 30 MPH.  At Pacheco Pass, winds are sustained at 29, gusting to 46 MPH.  All indications are the valley’s natural summer air conditioner is on full.

All this is being brought on by a rather robust low pressure system dropping into the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.  This low will form a trough into the Great Basin Friday, resulting in a north/northwest flow aloft.  The combination of the marine influence and the generally cooler air mass will result in much cooler temperatures today and especially Friday.  Some locations Friday afternoon will remain in the upper  80s.

The trough will move eastward by Saturday evening, allowing a weak ridge of high pressure to build in from the west.  Temperatures by early next week will drive right back into the upper 90s.  Yet another low is projected to dive southward out of the Gulf of Alaska to a position off the coast of the Pacific Northwest by the middle of next week.  A repeat performance will develop as another surge of  modified marine air moves down the valley, lowering temperatures Wednesday through Friday of next week.  The flow aloft during that time frame will be out of the southwest, maintaining mostly clear skies.

Temperatures will warm again next weekend as high pressure builds  just off the California coast.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Monday.  Continued to be mostly clear Monday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: June 26 through July 2:  This model has flip flopped a bit and indicates a trough of low pressure will be the more dominant feature during this time frame.  If this happens, a welcome cooling trend will occur with temperatures near to possibly marginally below average with the usual dry conditions continuing.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at times through Friday at 10 to 20 MPH.  Gusts in excess of 30 MPH are possible along the west side, especially along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds will decrease Friday night with typically summer winds out of the northwest afternoons and evenings Saturday and Sunday at 8 to 15 MPH and generally less than 10 MPH during the later night and morning hours.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
