July 6, 2019/report

 July 6, 2019

Summary: Weak low pressure centered near Vancouver Island this morning has had a trough into northern and central California for the better part of this week.  That trough has very temporarily retreated northward, allowing weak upper level high pressure to expand northward over central California.  The freezing level taken overnight at Vandenberg Air Force Base was right at 15,000 feet, which is fairly typical for early July while the marine layer along the coast is back down to 1,600 feet at Monterey.  The lack of modified sea breeze and increased pressures aloft will allow hottest temperatures this afternoon to move into the lower 100s.

That persistent low over the Pacific Northwest will again push a trough southward into northern and central California Sunday and Monday.  As usual, the marine layer will respond by deepening and, with an increasing onshore flow, that modified sea breeze will begin to lower temperatures Sunday and Monday.

A more traditional type summer pattern will begin the middle of  next week as upper level high pressure will expand over the Desert Southwest with central California ending up under the northwest flank of this high.  Temperatures will warm incrementally each day, moving into triple digits again by Friday and, if models hold, hot weather will continue for several days thereafter.  The exact center of the high will determine whether the winds will become southerly by next weekend, possibly moving a limited amount of monsoon moisture in for a chance of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but only occasional cloudiness would prevail over the valley floor.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: July 12 through July 18:  The trend the past couple of model runs is for dominant high pressure over the western one-third of the U.S.  This will result in above average temperatures during this time frame with the usual dry conditions continuing.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds through Sunday will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH afternoons and evenings, decreasing to around 5 to 10 MPH during the late  night through early morning hours.  Winds Sunday night through Tuesday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
