Forecast

July 11, 2019/report

 July 11, 2019

Summary: High pressure at the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere has become ensconced over the Four Corners region of the Desert Southwest.  The high is expanding west and northwest, finally returning temperatures to near seasonal averages today with readings moving into triple digits Friday through Monday.  For now, it appears Saturday will be the hottest in this series with readings soaring into the 104 to 108 degree range at many locations.

Typically under this pattern, the winds become south to southeast.  The clockwise rotation around the high will have winds out of the south Friday and Saturday.  Satellite imagery already indicates monsoon moisture has already moved as far west as the California/Arizona border.  A limited amount of that moisture will make its way into southern California and possibly up the Sierra Nevada late Friday and Saturday for a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms over the back country.

By Sunday, a weak trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest, flattening out the high and starting a minor cooling trend.  Monday through Wednesday, the marine layer will deepen enough for a shallow intrusion of marine air to move down the valley, lowering temperatures into the  mid to upper 90s.  some models show a strong high between the 18 and 20 shifting further west which, in theory, would drive temperatures above average once again.  We’ll see if this trend continues in the coming days.

Forecast: Mostly clear and warmer through Thursday.  Mostly clear and hot Friday through Sunday.  Mostly clear and a bit cooler Monday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: July 18 through July 24:  This model shows the main heat belt from the Rocky Mountains eastward while a weak trough is along the west coast.  Since this trough is unimpressive, temperatures will remain near average with no chance of precipitation.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH and 3 to 8 MPH during the later night and morning hours.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
