August 1, 2019/report

August 1, 2019

Summary: Typically, during the latter part of summer, the players on the weather map evolve very slowly.  That is certainly the case with the current weather pattern.  The two main features are a strong high centered over the Texas panhandle and a low pressure trough extending from its center over British Columbia southward to off the west coast.  The marine layer is fairly deep.  The current sounding at Monterey indicates a depth of 2,800 feet.  However, the onshore flow is pretty weak.  Even so, enough modified marine air will maintain temperatures in the low to mid 90s from Madera County north.  The impact on the central and south valley will be minimal with readings near the upper 90s to even the low 100s in Kern County.

Currently, the winds aloft are out of the southwest which is keeping skies over central California cloud free.  Over the weekend, the high center over the southern plains will migrate westward, eventually centering over the Four corners region.  That will put central California on the western edge of the high, resulting in another bout of hot weather with widespread triple digits this weekend through Tuesday.  The winds aloft will become southerly, but for now, the amount of monsoonal moisture embedded within this flow appears to be minimal.  As a result, mostly clear skies will continue with a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada during the afternoons and evenings Sunday through Tuesday.

Models vary a great deal for next Wednesday and beyond.  One places an upper low right off the California coast while others indicate this feature will be further off shore.  For now, it appears somewhat cooler weather will arrive later next week.

Forecast: Clear skies through Saturday night.   mostly clear and hot Sunday through Tuesday.  Mostly clear and less hot Wednesday and Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: August 7 through August13:  This model shows central California sandwiched between a trough of low pressure off shore and upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest which is typical for early August. This will result in near average temperatures and dry conditions through mid August.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH afternoons and evenings with local gusts to near 20 possible.  Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
