Forecast

August 16, 2019/report

August 16, 2019

Summary: Triple digits will again be widespread throughout the valley today with hottest locations possibly in the 108 to 109 degree range.  Most other locations will be between 104 and 107.  Strong upper level high pressure is centered just to the southwest of San Diego with another high center over the Four Corners region.  The marine layer along the coast remains quite shallow with a depth of 900 feet at Monterey.  For the second morning in a row, winds in the Delta are light.

Cooler weather is on the way however, as the main high center drifts further west off the Baja, California coastline.  This will allow pressures aloft to begin to weaken as a weak trough of low pressure moves into the interior west.  Hottest locations Saturday will still be around the century mark but will drop into the mid 90s Sunday and Monday.

The flow aloft which is currently southwesterly will become westerly Saturday through Monday for a continuation of clear skies.  By Tuesday, upper level high pressure will be building over the Desert Southwest with its center over the Four Corners region initially.  Most models show the center moving westward into Arizona and southern California by mid week.  This will again drive temperatures above the century mark.  For now, it does not appear it will be quite as hot as the current heatwave, but stay tuned.

The flow aloft will continue either westerly or southwesterly, so the monsoon will remain well east for at least the next several days.

Forecast: Clear and hot today.  Clear with a cooling trend Saturday through Monday.  Clear and becoming hot once again Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: August 22 through August 28:  Upper level high pressure will be persistent over the Desert Southwest and California.  Generally speaking, a dry, southwesterly flow will continue but it is possible the monsoon could affect the Sierra Nevada later in the period.  Temperatures will remain above average.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH today and tonight.  Winds over the weekend will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side.  Winds Sunday night and Monday will decrease to 5 to 12 MPH.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
