Summary: The latest batch of monsoonal moisture will be moving through today through the evening hours. Doppler radar is indicating scattered showers and thunderstorms over southern California and even a few sprinkles in the foothills east of Porterville. The cloud cover may be dense enough from time to time for a few sprinkles over the valley floor, but the chance of measurable rain at any given location is extremely low with the exception of the Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains where scattered to isolated thunderstorms will develop courtesy of daytime heating.
In the big picture, upper level high pressure has shifted a bit further east and is centered over Colorado this morning while a weak low center is just off the California coast. That low is beginning to cause the marine layer to deepen to a level of almost 2,000 feet. Winds through the Delta at Traverse Air Force Base are sustained at 17 MPH, gusting to 24. I don’t believe the benefits of that modified sea breeze will reach us until Friday.
A much stronger trough of low pressure will move inland from British Columbia southward through central California late Saturday afternoon through Sunday. This will result in a tinge of fall like weather as the flow aloft becomes northwesterly. At the surface, a strong push of marine air will flood the valley, resulting in much cooler temperatures beginning Saturday, but much more so Sunday and Monday when readings will fall into the mid to upper 80s.
Medium range models also indicate a reinforcing trough of low pressure will move through the Pacific Northwest and California Tuesday night and Wednesday, maintaining temperatures in the 80s. late Friday through Saturday, winds on the valley floor will also increase, becoming quite gusty at times, especially along the west side. For now, it appears the next warming trend will not occur until next weekend when models show high pressure building over the western U.S.
Forecast: Partly cloudy through late this evening with a small chance of a few sprinkles. Mostly clear late tonight through Monday with a cooling trend. Mostly clear and mild Monday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: September 12 through September 18: This model is indicating a blanket of upper level high pressure will be over the western one-third of the U.S., resulting in above average temperatures. Precipitation chances will remain extremely low.
August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest. The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley. The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.
August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other. As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months. This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.
Winds: Winds today will be generally out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH. Stronger gusts are possible near the Interstate 5 corridor. Later tonight through Saturday, there will be periods of gusty winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with gusts possibly in excess of 30 MPH, mainly along the west side, but locally elsewhere. Winds Sunday will continue to be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH possible, mainly along the west side.
Rain: The last batch of monsoonal moisture will move through central California through at least the late evening hours today. Scattered thunderstorms are pretty much a given over the southern Sierra Nevada and even the Kern County mountains. Cloud cover may become dense enough for a few sprinkles on the valley floor, but the chance of measurable rain at any given location is extremely low with the possible exception of real estate near the base of the Tehachapi Mountains if a dissipating thunderstorm moves away from the mountains. A dry pattern will return tonight and will last more than likely for the next week to ten days.
