Forecast

April 29, 2020/report

April 29, 2020

Summary: Upper level high pressure is beginning to shift into the interior west while a trough of low pressure over the eastern Pacific begins to approach the California coast.  High clouds have already spread over northern and parts of central California.  Even though the marine layer has deepened to around 1,500 feet along the central coast, it’s still not deep enough to surge inland and help temperatures trend downward.  The sea breeze is moving into the Delta where winds at Traverse Air Force Base are sustained at 23 MPH, gusting to 29.  However, further south, winds at Pacheco Pass are still light.

That modified sea breeze will move down the valley tonight and Thursday, but not before we experience the warmest day of the year so far as many locations on the valley floor move into the mid 90s.  a dry cold front will move through the valley Thursday morning, allowing temperatures to trend downward.  Over the weekend, another trough will move through the Pacific Northwest and northern California, returning temperatures to seasonal averages.  Yet another weak system will move through well to our north Monday night and Tuesday.

By the middle of next week, models are projecting another ridge of upper level high pressure will form and temperatures will once again rise above average.

Forecast: Mostly clear with high clouds mixed in through Thursday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Thursday night through Tuesday.  Mostly clear Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: May 6 through May 12:  This model indicates a dominant ridge of upper level high pressure will be over the eastern Pacific and California, resulting in above average temperatures.  The chance of rain during this timeframe appears to be very low.

May:  The first month of the dry season will be typically dry, in other words this model is portraying near average precipitation for the month of May.  It also appears the trend of above average temperatures will continue for the month.
