June 3, 2020

Summary:  Temperatures over the next 48 hours will spike upwards into triple digits.  The low pressure system off the southern California coast has retrograded somewhat, allowing upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest to expand into California.  The freezing level over Oakland has risen from 12,000 feet yesterday to 14,600 feet a short time ago.  The marine layer along the coast has been crushed.  The latest sounding at Monterey indicates a depth of just 200 feet.

The low off the south coast will move northeastward into southern California Friday and Friday night as another trough of low pressure moves into the Pacific Northwest.  A rather dramatic swing in temperatures will occur once again as a strong surge of marine air pushes inland Friday, lowering temperatures at least 10 degrees from Thursday’s anticipated highs.  As the low moves inland to our south, the winds aloft will briefly become southeast to even east.  There is a slight chance of a shower or isolated thunderstorm moving off the southern Sierra Nevada or off the Kern County mountains, mainly Friday afternoon and evening.  However, the chance of measurable rain at any given location is very low.

The low over the Pacific Northwest will dig a trough into California over the weekend.  Some models indicate temperatures will fall shy of the 80 degree mark Sunday and Monday as a pool of cold air aloft moves overhead.  By Monday night and Tuesday, a flat zone of upper level high pressure will begin to build in from the west for the beginning of our next warming trend.  We could see readings in the mid to upper 90s by the latter part of next week, however, models indicate there’s a possibility of another trough moving through next weekend.  This would again lower temperatures.

Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Thursday night.  variable cloudiness Friday and Friday night with a slight chance of isolated light showers or thunderstorms near the foothills.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy and much cooler Saturday through Monday.  Mostly clear and warmer Monday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: June 10 through June 16:  An early summer type pattern is evident on this model.  Temperatures will rise to above average with dry conditions continuing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 12 MPH through Thursday evening and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  Winds late Thursday night and Friday will increase out of the west at 10 to 20 MPH with local gusts to 35 MPH along the west side, especially near the base of the Coast Range.   Winds Friday night and Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH at times with stronger gusts.

Due to a medical procedure, there will be no report Thursday, June 4.  Reports will resume Friday, June 5.  Thank you.

Rain Discussion: The low pressure system off the southern California coast will move inland through southern California Friday through Friday night.  Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will erupt over the Sierra Nevada and possibly over the Kern County mountains.  For a short time, winds aloft will be out of the southeast then the east, so there will be a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm skirting the valley floor, mainly Friday afternoon and evening.  I must emphasize that the chance of measurable rain at any given location is very low.  Expect dry weather Saturday and on through next week.
