Summary: Upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific has shifted inland over California. The marine layer along the coast remains at only 500 feet with no sea breeze moving through the Delta. Temperatures this afternoon in the hottest locations will push the century mark. On Thursday, the high will begin to shift into the interior west in response to a large area of low pressure off the coast of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.
The marine layer will rapidly deepen Thursday, resulting in some cooling from roughly Fresno north. However the central and south valley will have to wait until Friday as a strong push of marine air surges through the Delta and other gaps and passes along the “Coast Range. Gusty westerly winds will begin by Thursday evening and will continue on and off through Saturday as the trough moves inland through California. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will spread down the Sierra Nevada Friday but any precipitation will remain generally over the high country.
Temperatures will tumble further Saturday as readings drop from near 100 Thursday to the lower 80s Saturday. By Sunday, the low will be moving into the lower Rockies, allowing a flat zone of high pressure to build in from the west for our next warming trend. It now appears much of next week will be characterized by weak high pressure off the coast extending inland over California with low pressure remaining over the Pacific Northwest. This will allow temperatures to rise a bit above average but for now it looks like we won’t be seeing triple digits for the next week.
Forecast: Mostly clear through Saturday. Mostly clear skies Saturday night through Wednesday.
