Forecast

June 13, 2020/report

June 13, 2020

Summary: Doppler radar was interesting to watch yesterday afternoon through the early evening hours.  It was clearly showing a band of blowing dust moving across the central and south valley as gusty west to northwest winds surged inland along a cold front.  Temperatures this morning are running anywhere from 10 to 13 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago.  There is an 11 millibar difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas, so even though it will not be nearly as windy as yesterday, above average wind conditions can be expected through the early evening.

Currently, a trough of low pressure is moving through northern and central California.  The air aloft associated with this trough is much cooler as illustrated by the freezing level which has dropped from 12,300 feet at this time yesterday to 9,500 feet early this morning.

Today will be by far the coolest we will see for quite some time as the low tracks northeastward into the northern Rockies Sunday.  From Monday through Wednesday, a flat zone of upper level high pressure will set up over the eastern Pacific Ocean and California while low pressure remains anchored over the Pacific Northwest and off shore waters.  The high will begin to firm up somewhat during the late part of the workweek and into the weekend.  It’s possible hottest locations could approach the century mark.

There is nothing exciting on medium range modeling for next week as a more or less typical summer pattern will prevail with high pressure over the eastern Pacific and California.  No extremes are anticipated at this time on either the hot or the cool side of the spectrum.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Wednesday.  Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook: June 20 through June 26:  This model indicates upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific extending through California will result in somewhat above average temperatures with dry conditions prevailing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Through this evening, there will be periods of winds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts possible, mainly along the west side.  Later tonight, winds will decrease to 5 to 10 MPH.  winds Sunday through Tuesday afternoons will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH and generally in the 3 to 7 MPH range during the night and morning hours along with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
