June 26 2020/report

June 26, 2020

Summary: A weak upper low that was centered over Nevada yesterday has moved southward and is now centered over Inyo County.  It will move into eastern San Bernardino County this afternoon. As a result, temperatures this afternoon will lower by about 2 degrees over yesterday’s highs.  The marine layer is right at 2,000 feet.  There is a minimal amount of modified sea breeze moving through the Delta.  At least report, winds were out of the southwest at 15 MPH.  Modified marine air isi also leaking through Pacheco Pass where winds are sustained at 17 MPH.

Yesterday the high temperature at Los Banos was 95 degrees due to the modified sea breeze.  On Saturday, the weak upper low will move into the Desert Southwest, allowing strong upper level high pressure just off shore to temporarily move inland, resulting in a brief spike in temperatures.  The latest balloon sounding over Oakland is indicating that high moving in as the freezing level has jumped 17,000 feet, which is the highest so far this year.

To our north, a fairly robust low pressure system will drop southward, centering over eastern Oregon Sunday.  A trough will also dig southward into northern and central California from this low.  As pressure differences increase, and wind energy aloft strengthens, a strong push of marine air will burst over the coastal range and through the Delta for gusty winds beginning Saturday evening with breezy conditions continuing through Monday.  Expect to see a great deal of dust in the air Saturday night and Sunday.  The biggest story will be the triumphant end to the heat wave as temperatures drop into the low to mid 90s Sunday and into the mid 80s Monday.

By Tuesday, the low will begin to track into the Rocky Mountain region, allowing a zone of high pressure over the eastern Pacific to begin to move inland. Models vary a great deal on the placement of various features by next weekend.  For now, it appears upper ops will begin Wednesday and continue into next weekend.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Saturday.  Mostly clear, breezy, and much cooler Saturday night through Monday.  Mostly clear Monday night through Friday  with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  July 2 through July 8:  This model is indicating a fairly typical summer pattern with high pressure dominating over the eastern Pacific, extending over California into the Desert Southwest.  Temperatures will be marginally above average with typical dry conditions continuing.

June:  The month of June brings us into the dry season for central California.  The chance of rain during the month will be very low on any given day.  This model indicates we can expect above average temperatures for the month.

June, July, August:  What can you say about the summer months in the valley except it will be hot and dry.  Of course, this summer will be no exception.  Precipitation will be near average, which is next to none.  This model indicates the next three months will have above average temperatures, but what else is new?

Winds Discussion: Winds today will be generally out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH this afternoon.  Winds overnight will be generally at or less than 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.  Winds Saturday morning will be generally light.  By late Saturday afternoon, winds will rapidly increase out of the west at 15 to 25 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH, mainly along the west side. Winds Sunday through Monday will be generally out of the northwest at 10 to 20 MPH with stronger gusts, diminishing Monday evening.
